Is rug underlay a myth sold to us to make a few extra sales? Is it really a necessary?
The very quick answer to this is ‘YES’
Underlay can offer an efficient, simple and convenient way to stopping your rug slipping or moving on all types of floors, including laminates, wood, vinyl, tiles and carpet.
Did you know that a good quality underlay prolong the life of your rug and floor because it cushions the impact of foot traffic, as well as giving added comfort and add protection. Over time, damage to your floor can be caused by collections of dirt and grime underneath your rug. These small abrasions can scratch your hardwood floors or wear down carpeting.
Rug Underlay is designed with a surface that will stick to both the floor and the rug. This is especially important if you are placing the rug on a hard, slick surface like tile or hardwood. Its best to get an understanding to which is the best underlay for your floor and which best suits you.
The two main surfaces in a home are hard floors (wood, laminate and tiles) and soft floors (carpets). Choosing the correct underlay is not only beneficial to your safety but to the protection of your rug and floor.
Hard Floors (wood, laminate and tiles)
If you’re laying a rug on tiles, laminate or wood flooring, the most important challenge will be slippery surface that can be caused by moisture or liquids spilt.
Therefore, choosing a the correct non-slip underlay product is essential. The best carpet underlay product for reducing the slip on hardflooring is a rubber based underlay.
Soft Flooring (carpets)
For soft flooring such as carpet, you don’t have to worry as much about the slipping of a rug however you should always check the backing of a rug to make sure its suitable for the carpet its will be laid upon. Thinking more about how much increased thickness you like on your carpet can behind purchasing underlay as it can also protect the carpet underneath from spillages and traffic wear.
The recommendation we usually make is a non slip fleece based underlay.
How to fit underlay
The fleece underlay may need to be trimmed with scissors to fit under the rug, which is easily done, keep the underlay covered until you are ready to lay it due to dirt and dust being collected on its sticky surface. When cutting the underlay always make sure that the underlay is not seen over the edges of the rug. It is recommended that you have between 3-5cms distance from the edge of the rug.
Over time naturally the rug fleece underlay will collect dirt, dust and fluff, and may start to lose it’s non slip grip, it is recommended that every few months the underlay is lifted to be hand or machine washed at 300C. Allow to dry naturally and re lay the underlay back in position.
As mentioned previously rug underlay offers many benefits such as its protection for hard/soft floors and safety qualities. Over time you’ll see that underlay is a good investment for any rug buyer!
